I received series of calls from a man this morning calling from +917718201977 and he told that he is calling from SBI Dalhousie branch and asked me about my KYC. I told him that I have had my KYC submitted to the bank quite some time back. He told me that I need to submit it again or else the bank is going to stop my account. He has got hold of my card number. He also has access to my phone number in which he has called. He then sent me a message which looks like system generated message with a OTP which says that some purchase of 20,000 rupees has been made through my card. I saw red. The man kept on insisting that this OTP is generated to verify my account and not for purchase of something. He has insisted that had it been a fake call, how could I receive the system generated message. I immediately went to my bank and asked if such kind of calls are being made on behalf of SBI. They confirmed that this is a fake call. The man kept calling me. I told him that I am going to the police station to report against It. Since then the number is switched off.
I am dumbfound at his modus operandi. It was definitely a fake call. But the message he sent looked like a system-generated message. I am very much worried as everyday we are encouraged to use virtual money and our cards with details are swiped and the phone numbers documented.
It seems that all our security data can be hacked so easily.
